Believe it or not, walking is one of the easiest ways to make sure you're exercising your heart every day.
Even just 30 minutes each day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and even boost energy, confidence, & endurance. Daily exercise has been proven over and over to reduce your risk of developing all kinds of conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. The best part is, walking is free and doesn’t require any special equipment or training.
How to Get More Steps In
park farther away than you need to when you're shopping
ALWAYS take the stairs!
keep your alarm away from your bed
walk around while you're on the phone
throw a dance party for 1 (or whoever's home) in your jammies
A Few Reasons to Get Steppin'
It's a good way to get the family active, together. Walking isn't only inexpensive for the whole family, but it's generally pretty safe as well! Even the dog can join in, and
will benefit from the fresh air and mental health benefits of getting outside! It's a great way to spend quality time together and everyone gets a little more healthy for it.
Your heart will thank you... now and down the road. The National Library of Medicine even says, "Walking appears to have CVD (cardiovascular disease) -related health benefits in younger, middle, and older men and women, in both healthy and patient populations." (Check out the article here!) That means everyone can benefit form getting a few extra steps in.
Your whole body benefits from walking. Walking improves health concerns like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, inflammation, and peripheral artery disease. But if saving your heart and body are not enough to get you moving, consider that walking also helps protect against dementia, depression, anxiety/OCD, and even erectile dysfunction. So... that'll convince you! ;)
Walking will help you lose weight. Health concerns aside, adding regular brisk walks to your fitness or nutrition plan can make a huge difference in your fat loss progress! If you really want to burn some calories, try incorporate 30 seconds of light jogging every minute or so. Even by upping your average daily steps by a few hundred, you'll be burning extra calories, each day. Remember - it's always about consistent, long-term action.
To get the best results, try walking at a pace where you can hold short
conversations, but something like singing wouldn't be possible!
